Tell your representatives how much you love bicycle infrastructure!
Elected officials and public servants hear complaints all the time. We sign petitions, protest, call, and email to advocate for what needs to be changed. It makes sense: we have to tell them what is broken so they can fix it.
But if we don't tell them when we're happy about something and want to see more of it, they only hear the people complaining about the thing we like!
How do I figure out who to contact?
People working at different levels of government have different responsibilities when it comes to public infrastructure.
- Federal: funding
- State: passing laws that affect bicycle infrastructure and safety
- County, city, and town: building safe bike infrastructure in your area
How else can I advocate for bicycle infrastructure?
- Pay attention to your city's public meetings, and go to the ones that talk about roads
- Join your local bicycle advocacy group, and donate to them if you can
- Volunteer at your local bicycle cooperative
- Sign up for newsletters of organizations that advocate for sustainable bicycle and transit infrastructure, and participate when they ask for volunteers
